Inky sketchy circles

Here is my second card of the week using the 52 Christmas Card Throwdown sketch.

This one is all done with masking rather than layers.

I cut the circles from a post it and copy paper, and attached the small circle and the large outer to a piece of Clarity coated card, cut to size.

I stamped the large semi circle space with the small Clarity snowflakes, the same as the last card, using watermark ink. After allowing it to dry, I blended chipped sapphire distress ink over the top, creating a resist.

I took a photo at this stage as I quite liked it and wasn't sure I wouldn't muck up the next stage. I love the crisp outline the masking gives you.

I then attached an outer mask around the small circle. I used torn paper and a make up sponge to add some contours to the bottom, using chipped sapphire again. I used the straight edge of the copy paper to add a frozen lake, then added a sky and went around the bottom of the circle as well to define it.

The focal point is a skater, from the Clarity Christmas Wee folk stamp set. I used black permanent ink to stamp her in.

Finally, I used a white pen to add snow in the sky.

I edged the piece with the chipped sapphire ink, and mounted on a 6x6 card.

I think the composition of the central image could be improved  here, but I love how moody and atmospheric it has come out. It looks quite dimensional as well, almost like a bauble in the card.

  1. Oh WOW! You MASKED the circle and semicircle!!! Your sponging techniques and the resist are fantastic! Call me impressed, seriously impressed. :)
Thanks so much for making a second card for my sketch challenge at 52CCT!

    1. Well, thank you Patricia, I'm very chuffed at your comment. I do like masking, it takes a bit of concentration but the results are worth it.

  2. Another beautiful take on the sketch! I think your masking skills are awesome (and I think it's the right word here!). Love it. Thanks so much for playing along with 52CCT this week. Deborah, DT.

    1. Thank you! I just thought I'd give it a go, as a different approach to the sketch. Might try another one with a bigger central circle - this one was determined by the size of my post it notes!
